The USMC Maintenance Center in Albany GA has invested heavily in new technology for 3D scanning and reverse engineering.  The main impetus behind this effort is to improve performance of maintenance and refit tasks on vehicles such as the Humvee and LAV.

Traditional methods of developing modifications required several iterations to fabricate parts that fit to the original vehicle.  By introducing accurate 3D scanned data into the process, engineers with the Marine Corps are able to design new parts using Rapidform XOR software, then transfer their designs directly to their Solidworks CAD system.

Parts designed from the laser scans are more accurate, fit the first time, and ulitimately reduce scrap.
