The Automobile Club de l’Ouest recently acquired the MetraSCAN 3D scanner – the optimal inspection and measurement system available – for their team of scrutineers at this years 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Featured in the video above, an inspector uses a weird looking gun on the #51 Ferrari 488 GTE of AF Corse Racing in the room where scrutineering typically takes place before the upcoming Test Day for the 85th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The inspector, Thierry Bouvet, of the ACO’s International Technical Delegate, explains:

“It’s a 3D scanner that reproduces the surface of the car to check dimensions such as the wheelbase…”.

Engineers in the racing world pull inspiration from the technical regulations issued by the racing circuit. This state-of-the-art 3D measurement and inspection device helps the teams ensure that their inspiration and imagination doesn’t wander too far. This revolutionary technology allows for incredibly accurate scales to be integrated on the car, wasting no weight. With the MetraSCAN 3D scanner and this customized, portable race car inspection system, scrutineers across the world can now rely on technology to do most of the inspection for them!
